As government authorities in some countries continue to formulate stringent anti-cryptocurrency laws in their jurisdictions, a UK’s mosque is encouraging their members not to limit their donations to cash, but to bring their cryptocurrencies as well.
When the mosque at Shacklewell Lane, East London, announced the resolve some two months ago, people thought that it was mere joke. Now, they’ve announced receiving more donations in cryptocurrency than in cash. So far, the mosque received cryptocurrency donations worth £13,983, compared to £3,460 in cash donations.
According to local media reports, during the Islamic Ramadan fast, the church got a donation of 24 cryptocurrencies. It was also reported that an unnamed donor gave up to £5,200 worth of cryptocurrency. The mosque’s website made it crystal clear that they now receive cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Erkin Guney, chairman of the mosque, expressed delight that the initiative finally came through despite the barrage of criticisms after the original announcement on May 21st. Guney disclosed that the place of worship received four times more cryptocurrency donations than cash donations during Ramadan. He added that there are more Sadaqah, voluntary donations, coming in the form of cryptocurrency. Guney simply described the experience as “amazing.” Speaking further, Guney said that both Zakat, an obligatory donation where Muslims pay 2.5% of their annual earnings to assist underprivileged people, and Sadaqah, were mainly made in cryptocurrencies.
Guney disclosed that the mosque announced the idea to start accepting cryptocurrency when the Combo blockchain founder, Gurmit Singh, suggested they stood to benefit more for accepting them, given that many Muslims use cryptocurrencies anyway.
He added that by accepting cryptocurrencies, the members who already have crypto-assets would find it pretty easy to donate the virtual currency. To them, it would be easier than having to covert them to fiat currencies before donating.
Blockchain technology firm, Combo, has products on the market known as Crypto Sadaqah and Crypto Zakat. The idea behind these products was to bring Muslims into the cryptocurrency world. This idea of this move would open their eyes to the endless opportunities the industry offers.
Guney revealed that the cryptocurrencies donated will funnel to charities as well as fixing dilapidated parts of the mosque. With this move, the mosque is changing rapidly by taking faith-based donations to the next frontier.
