Developers of Block.one, from the EOSIO blockchain, organized the second EOS Hackathon. This event was organized on August 5th, 2018, at the ICC in Sydney, Australia. There were more than 200 international participants, segregated into 50 teams. Most importantly, the participating teams coded and created decentralized apps (dApps) on the EOSIO platform. The Sydney hackathon conceived a theme of Hack the Outback. Hence, they instructed the teams to develop apps which will allow the public to sustain the environment. The panel of judges included international, blockchain, and technology experts.
Australian teams took away three top prizes amounting to $120,000. Besides that, they contested against the others and won after coding for 26 hours. The winning project for this event was the SmartPress application. This application enables the users to develop smart contracts on the EOS platform without writing any code. Also, it doesn’t demand having an expert technical skill. The judges scrutinized the demonstration of this app with an environmental mapping tool. The second prize winning application was Greenbank. This application commits to prevent the wastage of global and local food with appropriate supply chain management. The third prize winning team was TokenTree with their gamified app that battles deforestation. This app allows the users to nurture and also track trees in their life-cycles. Furthermore, an Australian team won the Best Social Impact Prize, for an application to protect endangered animal species.
The venture capital (VC) unit of Block.one launched its initiative for seed funding at the Sydney hackathon. The program named “Hack, Pitch, Launch” offered a total of $1 million in seed funding to the developers who pitch their decentralized apps to the EOS VC unit.
In June 2018, EOS held a hackathon at Hong Kong. Likewise, EOS announced hackathons at London in September 2018 and another city in November 2018. By participating in these hackathons, developer teams gain the eligibility for seed funding of $50,000. Above all, the five selected teams from each hackathon event receive the seed funding. The grand finale will be conducted in December 2018. It will declare the three winners of each of four hackathons. They will compete against each other to win the grand hackathon prize.
Block.one‘s EOS token has reached a high market capitalization of over $6 billion in a short span of time. Corporate professionals use the EOS blockchain extensively because of its many useful features. Additionally, developing applications for social and environmental improvement, using this platform remains a priority. The VC unit of Block.one saw demonstrations of many interesting applications at the Sydney hackathon. Therefore, after reviewing these ideas, the EOS VC unit will notify the eligible teams whether or not they have qualified for seed funding for the further development of their application.
